dig out the old Delorian Doc hid in the mine, siphon a bit of gas out to put in the Delorian with the gas leak (after patching the hole, of course), re-bury the old Delorian (so Marty can still get back from the 50's), and head on back to the 80's? Seems a lot easier than the whole train thing :)

Remember, Doc came back to the 1800s in the Delorian, buried it (not sure exactly when he buried it), then sent the letter to Marty a few months (?) later. Marty came back right after he received the letter (not long after Doc sent it). So, if they went right over to the Delorian Doc buried a few months ago, the car wouldn't have aged very much by that time. Unless that is long enough for fuel to deteriorate/evaporate?

There's no guarantee that the buried Delorian had any gas in it.

Because the gas in the old Delorian would have been too old and worthless by the time Marty and Doc got to it in 1955. That was a good thought though! I never would've thought of that!

EDIT: Yes, he did bury it only a few months before, but in "real" time it had been seventy years and a few months before. Remember, Doc was in the Old West (1885) when he buried it. Marty was still in 1955. The gas was way too old to be used. That's why the Delorian was so busted and rusted when Marty and Doc found it.

Yes, I've always wondered the same thing when I watch the movies. Perhaps Doc used up the gas on other things before hiding it in the mine. And to everyone else, this scenario she described makes absolute perfect sense, no questions asked. As long as you can think 4th dimensionally!! ;)

Greg, that was whiskey they tried in "Marty's" Delorean. That blew out the fuel injection manifold. The fuel in "Doc's" Delorean would have still been there, but useless to them at that point, unless they'd swap manifolds. They would have had to try Doc's gasoline in Marty's Delorean before they tried the whiskey.

Realistically, they either didn't use the gas because the writer's didn't think of that situation (likely, since they didn't even bother to have Doc mention that it was used up or something like that), or they did think of it but decided to just ignore it.

EDIT: Peachy Keen, everything being referred to is taking place in 1885. This has nothing to do with 1955. She's asking why when Marty went back in his car to find Doc in 1885, why didn't they just go over to Doc's car and get the gas from it? Nothing to do with 1955.

That is very true. In fact they would not have to patch the hole, since they could have just replaced the fuel line from the one in the mine to the other Marty came in. Then siphoned the fuel (not a whole bunch needed) and gone from there. Granted that would have made a really short movie and the sales would have been terrible. Good thinking.

Back to the Future III came out in 1990. So the only way for you to fix this is to dig up the old delorian and take it back to 1990 and re bury it and tell Robert Zemeckis your problem with the plot. Try not to run into yourself.

I'd have to watch the movie again to be certain...but I seem to recall Doc putting some kinda home-made fuel in the Delorian that caused it to die. So chances are, whatever fuel was in there was probably ruined.

because then it would have taken away from alot of the suspense that the train option created. Not to mention that it also left no room for a BTTF 4. It ended the trilogy. 2 and 3 were filmed at the exact same time and they were already under budget with not alot of fans.

Because Doc liked the idea of going back to the Wild West. Cars weren't invented yet. Plus they had to do something new for the 3rd movie

What??? There wasn't any gas or cars til like the late1800s. Also Marty wouldn't have lived from 1855 til 1950... he was from the future but ages with each passing day.
