There are two I would recommend and have personal experience with.

1.) Eureka SmartBoss 4800 series ($150)
*A Consumer Reports Best Buy and carries Good
Housekeeping Seal
2.) Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum ($250)

I own a housecleaning company and we just replaced the Eureka with the new Bissell Healthy Home. We did a lot of research in determining what would replace the Eureka. We even returned a few due to lack of suction. With our #1 priority is suction, so we understand your dilemma. We also have high standards for our vacuums and these both meet those standards.

My overall advice is to go to your local Target or any other department store that has vacuums and check them out in person. Pick them up, play with the attachments and if you can, some department stores will even let you plug in the displays and try them. Also, a word of advice, don't fall into the Dyson fad because they are far overrated (have plenty of personal experience with them and can compare to other brands. Also, they did not rate that good with Consumer Reports - they were right in the middle of the list). Avoid Oreck as well, they may be lightweight, but they well. . .suck (pardon my pun). Just because they have a high price doesn't always mean you will get what you pay for.

Finally check out consumer reports and amazon.com because they have accurate reviews of any vacuum you are looking for. Good Luck!

Bissell, $45-55 at WalMart. Bag and bagless and they DO suck.

I have an Electrolux, but it was pricey. I tried a hoover upright, and found that it was big and heavy. Be sure you can easily lift it
