iceberg lettuce is no good - it doesn't hurt them but also doesn't give them what they need to survive. Romaine lettuce is PERFECT. Experiment with celery, strawberries, worm, crickets and of courcse visit your local pet store for turtle specific food.

Can the turtle bring it's head in and cover it with it's shell if it can it ia box turtle.

If it cannot and it has a red streak about where you would expect an ear it is an Red Eared Slider (RES).

Good luck with your new friend.

Please do that turtle a huge and humane favor and return him to the exact spot that you found him---only just off the road this time! Most likely, he is a Box Turtle, and he does not belong in captivity. The longer you keep him, the more exposed he becomes to human diseases, which can not only be deadly to him, but can also wipe out an entire area's population of turtles once you return him to the wild. Please, please, please don't think that you will be doing him any favors by relocating him to what you feel is a safer habitat for him. Box Turtles can spend up to five years of their lives trying to make it back to what they deem their home territory. Again, the nicest thing you can do is to return this turtle to the spot where you found him--but safely off the road this time. Do the right thing here, please.

You did not 'find a stray turtle'- it was not lost. You kidnapped a turtle from its life.

PLEASE return it ASAP to where you got it from. Turtles in the wild are threatened every day, and we need to help them.

It is illegal to catch turtles in many places, especially if it IS a Box Turtle, which is endangered or threatened in most of its territory. A big part of the reason for this is because they are in so much trouble.

Never bring home a turtle that is not from the store.. he is a wild turtle and not used to human contact or his surroundings. I have raised turtles and its cruel to bring a turtle home that is from the wild just to please yourself. Set him free in or around the nearest pond away from traffic. He might not eat due to fright but if you insist on pleasing yourself and keeping it, then you need to buy feeder fish from the pet store or raw hamburger or frozen shrimp squares from the pet store or night crawlers but you'd have to cut them into smaller pieces for him. Turtles from the pet store are used to people and being handled without being scared. Wild turtles are different. You have to make sure his shell is properly treated-and that he gets enough sunlight. Why force him to be in that situation to make yourself happy. Well, you know the right thing to do, i hope you will do it. Good luck with his eating.
