unless you're like me and do reviews too, you should always look for books in the genre's that you enjoy, and perhaps authored by writers that you may know, though there are so very many good writers out there, I don't think I'll ever be able to read all of the books that I know I'd enjoy.
When I do a book for review, a copy is sent to me either, PDF, or print and sometimes an advanced review copy with is not been through the final edit-- When I read for enjoyment, I purchase the books, I read reviews and summaries on the publishers and booksellers sites (bookseller sites are more honest because they are by readers) then I'll purchase the book. I've seldom been disappointed.

My mother always told me never to judge a book by its cover, but I have to admit that I do! I walk through shops and libraries and only reach for books that immediately jump out at me, from there I look at the title, and then the blurb. If there is a book I like particularly I might try another by the same author. I don't care much for genre, I'll read anything; but some people prefer to stick to a particular genre type.

Like other answerers have said, there is plenty on the internet.
However, wouldn't it be better to mix with other people. Join a book club - many libraries have them. They are free, you meet all kinds of interesting people and they can recommend books you may enjoy. Its probably best if you avoid the ones where they all read the same book and discuss it next time - they tend to be quite high brow books which is no good if you fancy a light read!
Happy reading!

I generally go on to google and put in 'book reviews' then i select a category i.e sci fi, biography, general fiction etc. There are some pretty good book review sites out there and I have read some great books as a result that I may never have heard of before.

The cover is what usually draws me. Books that I've heard or read about in the media or that are on topics that interest me. I also try to keep in mind authors and books that might be mentioned in books that I've read, movies I've seen, etc.
Sometimes I'll just pull a book off the shelf and read the summary on the back to see if it interests me.
I'm also fond of reading books that are turned into movies, even if it's to usually rip Hollywood for not following the book.
I also use Amazon.com or other sites (Wikipedia, etc.) for popular books, recommendations ,etc.

I read book reviews in other publications (weekly magazines, like Time, Entertainment Weekly, etc. & newspapers ). I'll look over other readers' opinions on Amazon.com. If I've already read & enjoyed a work by an author, I'm more likely to try another of his/her work. I have a book club membership, so I check out their descriptions. And sometimes it's just by browsing in bookstores.
Whatever peaks my interest will probably come home with me.
(Trouble is, I've probably accumulated more books than I could read in the next 5 years -- but I can't stop buying 'em!) :- ]

I'm a member of Bookcrossing.com and we meet locally once a month to discuss and swap books we have read, so I learn a lot from the others. Also if I'm not sure about a book, I try to read the first 50 pages before giving up. If it doesn't grab me by then, it probably won't, but I at least give it a chance.
On the Bookcrossing site you can look up any book and see what other readers thought of it. Have a look at mine here: http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/peaceangel

I seriously judge books by their cover. At least, at first I do. If I'm looking at a whole shelf of books, I look for one that draws my eye, and if I like the summary on the back of the book, I give it a chance. I've actually discovered a lot of books that have since become my favorites that way.

that's a silly question u read the back of a book and see if it captures your intrest. now i know that ur not supposed to judge a book by its cover but u cant go around lookin at the back of every single book, so find one that looks inresting on the cover maybe even pick a book that looks like you'd never be interested in.
