Actually the number 666 is the sign of the anti-christ and according to some biblical scholars it is a reference to the numerical value of Nero's name. Nero being the ruler of Rome at the time the passage was written.

In chapter 13, the book of Revelations (last book of the bible) it tells of 'the mark of the beast' , or 'the anti-christ' that takes place at the end of time. The last verse of chapter 13 says that the beast will be a man, and the number of that man will be,"six hundred three score and six".......666....... Man has tried to figure out for centuries who the 666 will be, but it is generally applied to anything Satanic. Read the chapter for the total reference.

Well the earliest existing manuscript of Revelation from c. 300A.D. actually gives the number of the beast as 616. Though earlier historians are quoted as to other sources pre-dating this manuscript also giving the 666 we find in most modern day Bibles.

Which sparks an interesting debate really.

But I think the context of the number of the beast in the Book of Revelation is that it is needed for buying and selling goods. If you've got a credit card with the numbers 616 or 666 included... be warned!

technically speaking, 666 doesn't have to be the number of the devil. it is called, in the bible, the number of the antichrist. the devil is definitely anti-christ, but it could be someone else.

I heard that supposedly God created the Devil (before he became evil) on the sixth day of the week. Not that I don't believe in God and the Devil, but I'm not sure on which day God created angels (the Devil was originally an angel).
