I think the idea of making ebonics an official language is more than just stupid. It's insulting. It's not a language, it's a deformed version of English. All right, if you don't want to speak "the white man's langauge", fine! Go and learn a REAL African langauge. Don't make yourself and the rest of us look like complete idiots by not being able to speak your mother tounge. Whenever someone tries to speak to me like that, I correct them as they talk. It's annoying and I'm glad my parents taught me to speak proper English, whether I'm at a job interview or with friends.

I actually have to say that I disagree to a certain extent. I am under the impression that attempts to teach ebonics had the intention to reclaim, rectify and validate what many consider to be a rich and vibrant dialect that reflects the uniqueness of African American culture. To be considered a "language" persay - maybe not so much. But to be recognized and valued for the history that it holds and came of - yeah, I can see that. I mean, what people are often saying in this debate from what I've heard is also that you have African American children who grow up in areas where everybody speaks the same way, and rather than shaming them for what is a shared dialect, it should be celebrated. On the other hand, yeah, if someone goes into a job interview, it's not going to get them anywhere, because dominant society is not at a place where they recognize or respect such things as being of value or reflecting intelligence. And likely it never will be. So, yes, indeed, to get our children off to a competitive start we must ensure that they have proper grasp of the DOMINANT cultures' version of English, but I think we should also look at the fact that every language in the world varies and becomes richer based on the color that diverse populations give it, and quite possibly we are succumbing to the pressures of white male dominated society norms when we label one as inheritly inferior while another is superior. Why? Why is the "proper" English what we know it to be? Who are the ones making those rules? THESE are things to think about.
Living in Hawai'i is similar. The pidgin that is spoken here is widely regarded as inferior to mainstream English and those who speak it are of course often regarded as speaking a dialect of less education and societal clout. However, when you really look at what a rich and complex dialect pidgin is, one can realize that in preserving it we also preserve much insight into the people and circumstances of Hawai'i and allow ourselves enlightenment into history and present situations. Languages say so very much - much more than what we hear on the surface. The give as much if not more insight and consciousness into a culture than foods, religions, etc.
So obviously, while I'm unsure about teaching Ebonics as an official "language" I do think we should value what grew out of this country in a one of a kind fashion and preserve it in some shape way or form.

I believe you are 100% correct. Realize that there is a feeling that African Americans have been robbed of their culture, and they have been certain extent. But embracing Ebonics will only help to propel the idea that African Americans are not intelligent and are incapable of learning English.
My suggestion would be learn, accept and master the English language. The learn a native language of Africa to keep your heritage and culture

first of all i does no longer take each and all the blame faraway from whites. because of the fact as you become older and wiser you will understand that the previous does influence the destiny. think of roughly it in simple terms before the previous due 70s blacks have been dealt with like crap and weren't given equivalent possibilities no count how plenty education they gained. So whites have been treating blacks and equals for sort of 30 years, it relatively is one technology. you are able to no longer anticipate an entire race to get it good in one technology. i'm 26 years previous, my mum and dad went by using all that segragated stuff. As for the grown adult men sitting around, reckoning on their a while weren't given the comparable opportunites which you and that i had becoming up. Now to different stuff. i'm chuffed that your responsive to what's going on around you. Your slightly puzzled in some factors, yet that incorporates being so youthful. What another race has found out is that education is the biggest for fulfillment. additionally team spirit between race and families. human beings will snigger at Indians for possessing little convient shops, yet thier kin owned. and that they use that money to deliver different kin to the U.S. from India or from everywhere they chosen to return from. and then they simply enhance the corporation. they have a plan in the past even coming to this usa. What blacks in this usa want is a plan and sense of loyalty to kin and to our human beings often. upload that with some education and we would be unstoppable. we are the main creative human beings in the worldwide.

Oh, they were serious about that...?
What in the world...
I want people to speak proper English for once. You speak however you want to speak when you're on the street with your friends, but when you have a job interview, you can't possibly expect your potential boss to be impressed by your use of "ain't, cuz," or "whateva." My parents did not tolerate that type of foolishness in their house. Way too colloquial.

i agree with beener all the way it is there (ebonics ) for a reason and does not show lack of intelligence but instead a high adaptable intelligence .to change a language of people and to have it recognized at all is a sign that you are doing something right culturally.
