In a right hand drive car, such as the ones found in England, is the fist gear still on the left side or is it also switched to the right??

Everything is the same. To keep manufacturing costs down for the automobile industry, they use just about all the same parts; instrument cluster, transmission gear-select, emergency brake, steering wheel, etc. The only thing different is the main dash panel, and on some cars even that is the same.

The new Saturn ION, the old Toyota Echo, and the Nissan Quest minivan all have center-mounted instrument clusters for this reason! In a right-hand drive, they just rotate the cluster to face the right. So next time the salesman tries to convince you that a center-mounted instrument cluster is somehow better for the driver or "cool," just remember that it's only that way to save the manufacturer a few extra dollars.

Yes, everything is identical to the left hand side drive except the controls are on the other side.

The manual shift uses the same pattern, the clutch, brake and gas peddles are oriented the same way.
