velocity has direction. going 25mph is a speed, but as soon as you say you're going 25mph east, it's a velocity

There's a big difference between speed and velocity if you think of the following. I'm flying at 100mph into a 50 mph wind, or I'm flying 100mph with a 50mph tail wind. When I'm flying into the wind my net speed is 50 mph. When I'm flying with the wind my net speed is 150 mph. You have to take into consideration the direction of speed to find out what your net speed will be.
