My obgyn just called me and told me that I had abnormal results on my pap smear. I am completely devastated. I have to go in to have a cervical sample taken. She told me that mine is the "mildest" of all of the different classes of abnormal pap smears. What exactly does that mean? Does that mean that I don't have cancer or does it mean I probably don't....or what? She tried to calm me and said that it was abnormal cell growth but I'm scared.

I have a one year old little boy who is my entire world and I'm frozen with fear. I'd also like to have at least 1 more child and that is upsetting me to. Does anyone have some insight? I'm just so upset, I can barely do anything. I can't go in for the cervical sample procedure until next week....then I have to wait 1+ weeks for the results. I'm not sure how to cope with the unknown for 3 more weeks. Help. :(

It's okay, calm down! If it was a really abnormal pap, they'd have you there today to get your cervical sample! I had a highly abnormal pap and they made room for me right away. Even so, I didn't have cervical cancer. I did have severe abnormal cell growth, but they did an in office procedure and all my paps have been perfect ever since!

(I was 24 with 2 young kids when this happened to me, so I know the stress you are going through. Surround yourself with loving people who will keep your stress level down and help you through the next weeks.)

You will be okay. Just get through the waiting and then you can do whatever it takes to make sure everything turns out alright.

Hang in there, Hon! You can do it!

Ok here goes. After I had my son (he is my second) my pap came back abnormal. I responded just the way you have seeing as I also had a 3 year old daughter. What my doc called it was precancerous cells. They werent cancer but if I didnt have it taken care of it could result in cervical cancer. I had to have a freezing procedure done and I am not really sure what it is called, and they also took a sample. I had to have another one done like 6 weeks later and it was as normal as all other times. Then a year later another came back abnormal. Turns out that that hpv virus that so many people have that dont know they have it because it carries no symptoms is what I have. Had to come from my boyfriend at the time cause I did not have it until 2 years into our relationship cause I had paps done regularly. Have your gyno check for this also. It's nothing bad, just something that can cause cancer. Just make sure you go to your yearlies. Everything will be fine. Don't stress about it it will only make it worse. Like I said been through it, and cervical cancer is one of the most curable cancers there is. Take care and the best of luck!!!

You are really worried about nothing. There are five stages of abnormal cell growth. I had the third...right in the middle. What is going to happen is much like a pap with a microscope to see your cervix better. They will wash your cervix with a vinegar solution to see the abnormal cells better (they will turn white). Then the doctor will use a brush looking thing to scrape some skin cells from your cervix. Mine didn't hurt too much, but I had some mild cramping the rest of the day. You will still be able to have more children. If this does turn into cancer, which it probably won't, and it is not an aggressive form, your doctor should put off any kind of surgery for you to have a baby. That is what my doctor told me.

RELAX. Abnormal pap smears are very, very common. I am an ultrasound technician and specialize in OB/GYN sonograms at a major women's hospital. I see women EVERY DAY who have had an abnormal PAP at sometime in their lives. EVERY DAY. Most often it is either a "false positive" or a mild form of cervical dysplasia. Most likely, whatever it is is NON-CANCEROUS. There are many causes for abnormal PAPs, and the least common is cancer. Really, relax. I know you are scared, but try to downplay that to "responsible concern." Okay? And here is something else to think about: even if it is cancer (which most likely it is not) it is VERY treatable. It is nearly always only the person who ignored symptoms or did not get PAP smears who die from uterine cancer.
I'd bet a ton of money you'll be fine. Okay? Take a deep breath and relax.

CALM DOWN! Deep breath... Okay, an abnormal pap smear is not the end of the world... Alot of simple things cause an abnormal pap, but it always a good idea to get it checked. Something as simple as getting over your period a few days before your appointment, douching, or sometimes even having sex within a short time prior to your appointment. Did you recently have a yeast infection? That could throw it off too... When you go in for the procedure they will remove a small piece of tissue and test that... Most likely whatever cause the imbalance down there could be cleared up... Just breath, don't panic, and remember that worrying yourself is not a good idea to your health either. Whatever it is it won't change the ultimate outcome by worrying... The only thing that worrying is gonna do is stress you more, and possibly make you sick... You will find out when you find out...

WHOA, slow down. I HATE when doctors do that.

First of all, almost EVERY women gets an abnormal pap now and then. If you recently had a yeast infection that can throw it off...there are lots of things that can ESPECIALLY if it is a mild case. BEFORE you let her cut off a chunk of your cervix, ask for another papsmear in another month or two.

Doctors are WAY to eager to start clipping away at stuff.

Please, dont let this bother you so much. I promise, they are SO common and end up being nothing. Just wait, have another papsmear in the near future, in between a period. It will come back fine. I've been there done that plenty of times as I am sure many other women have.

Sometimes when a pap comes back abnormal it could mean that you have some kind of infection it dose not always mean you have cancer I understand you are scared I know I was but I just thought about my kids and family they were very supportive at helping me through and I am sure yours would be also. I hope the best for you and pray that it was a false abnormality.

Surf the net and get more information. I have gone through the leep which is for moderate displaysia and it is scary. Your mildest case is just that-but remember to keep getting your testing done each year. Because I had moderate I am bi-yearly testing. I am sure sorry that I missed that ONE appointment! However, the waiting game is worrisome and I have received news that my sample was not cancerous.
You will find that times of the month, last sexual encounter or other personal things can alter your test and once re-tested could come back fine.
The good news is that these procedures does not affect having more children :) Take care, don't worry...life is too short to stress.

I had the same thing happen to me after the birth of my daughter. It turned out to be Dysplasia(abnormal cell growth) I went in for a biopsy ended up having to have a leep and laser (cut out the biggest part and laser the rest) of my cervix. If yours comes to this you will be put to sleep. It is totally painless after wards just a little spotting and maybe a few cramps. If its just a mild case chances are its not cancer just if left untreated it can turn in to cancer so don't freak out just follow up on every Dr. visit and relax it will be fine. I would say I am 100% sure its not cancer. Wouldnt say if it I had not been through it my self. The unknown is scary. If you need more information such as the chances its cancer call your Dr. They know the fear people feel and surley he can reassure you everything is going to be fine. Good luck.

I have had many abnormal paps. The first one- 12 years ago- scared me to death. Now I almost expect them.

You will probably have to get paps every 3 months for a while, but other than that you should be OK. Worse case you have a few cells removed from your cervix. That hurts a little, but nothing like even a bad period would be.
