I have a poem that was written in 1946 when my Aunts and Uncles died in a house fire. My only living Aunt would love for it too be cross stitched. So I was hoping to complete this for her. Before she pass on.

On the sites with samplers you often see complete alphabets, in different styles and sizes.

Pick out one that feels right, and is small enough that you can fit the whole poem in the frame.

The smallest most letters can be is 3 stitches wide, but some, like the w need at least 5.
The minimum height of the letters will be 5 stitches high.

Count on one space between the letters and 3 between lines.

Maybe there is a site that will convert your text into a counted cross stitch pattern, otherwise you will have to do it yourself. Letter by letter.

It will be a lovely gift for your aunt.

Does it have to be cross stitch? You could find a sampler pattern or a book of alphabets at a store or the library and do the conversion by hand. Or you could buy or find someone with a program like pattern maker from http://www.hobbyware.com that would do the work for you.

But I find that cross stitch alphabets are a bit hard to read. Personally, I'd find someone with good handwriting and have them trace the poem onto embroidery fabric and then work the letters in something like a stem stitch.

As one of your other answerers suggested, http://hobbyware.com has a free trial. This is the cross stitch software I use, and it is not complicated. Doing just text shouldn't be hard for you to do. It uses the fonts you have on your computer. If there's nothing you like-there are plenty of free fonts sites.
A couple of other sites with free cross stitch generators
http://celticxstitch.ie/cgi-bin/stitches.cgi
http://darklilac.com/upload.jsp Here you'll have to print off the poem, and upload it as a jpeg.
You may have to do a few sentences at a time and put them all together. Hope this helps All in all, I'd say your best bet is to take the free trial at hobbyware.
