Yes, it can be, especially when you are carrying a heavy college load or doing research for a work project with a deadline.
I always prided myself on my speed-reading until illness forced me to start listening to books recently because I cannot hold a hard copy book for long periods of time.
I now find I love listening to books because it forces me to slow down, relax and really take my time enjoying each and every word an author has written. Since poor punctuation or editing has always bothered me, I find the relief from looking at such things truly freeing.
Happy reading. Whether you read slow or fast, listen to audiobooks or place your fingertips on Braille pages, I think it is one of the finest things to do for work or pleasure.

Works for me. I find it incredibly useful for my history degree because of all those books and sources I have to read. A lot of people take far longer to wade through books than I do. I speed read through normal books as well, it's natural to me: I don't miss any words out, and I read more books than I would do if I didn't speed read.

It depends what you are speed reading for.
If you are doing it to find facts in non-fiction books, I suppose it would be. But reading for pleasure is a method of relaxation, so to me, speed reading defeats the object.
(Silly but true, my ex bought a book on speed reading, and never got past page 5!)
