It seems to be a metaphor for the fact that a soul is not bound to earth like the body. Wings have always represented freedom and escape. Plato was using that symbology to express his view of the relative freedom of the spiritual as opposed to the captivity and limitations of the purely material.

Kathleen says "Source(s): Personal knowledge."

Wow, I wish I knew that! How can you possibly know whether souls have wings or not? Maybe you think they don't have wings, but as you won't know until you die and by then it's too late to tell anyone I think it's best not to make any false claims!

I think the question should be "Do souls exist? What evidence is there either way?", rather than just assuming they do and asking whether they're winged.

Wings could just have been symbolic to imply the extreme speed at which the soul and gods were supposed to be capable of traveling across and beyond the physical world.

That is an imagery described by man throughout history and even immortalized in statues and religious symbols.

I believe that what you described can be attributed to writings about the soul or spirit.

Considering there is not any evidence for the existence of a "soul", they can have any feature which your imagination desires since they are most likely creatures of such.

No. Some angels have wings
When we pass on, our souls go to God and our souls do not suddenly grow wings!!!
May God bless you.

If you believe in mythology, yes.
But I don't, so that would be a big, fat, juicy N-O. Angels have wings, a soul
doesn't weigh anything and therefore,
doesn't require any wings.

I don't think so. Most of these ancient philosophers spoke figuratively, so you have to use a little imagination when relating to their words.
