You can apply mascara with the mouth closed. Opening your mouth opens the eyes wider, which makes it easier to apply the mascara to the bottom lashes. (It's all about stretching out the lower lid/eye area...)

I heard somewhere that opening the mouth enables the eyes to open wider (making it easier to apply mascara). I tried it and it kind of worked.

I can put it on without opening my mouth. It's just some people's habits I guess.

If you haven't already, you will soon come to notice that women can't do anything with their mouth closed. It's a design flaw.
