I have a desktop PC whose USB are no longer working (done all the trouble shooting for that) and I need to pull files off the desktop. Can I use the crossover cable to move the info from the desktop to my laptop? If so, how can I access the desktop once it's connected to my laptop with the cable?

yes, make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup and make sure TCP is setup in the same subnet / subnet mask.

go to Control Panel > network Connections then right click on LAN connection, click properties, then select TCP/IP properties. set the IP to say 192.168.1.5 on the first 1 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, on the second set the IP to 192.168.1.6 with same subnet mask.

if file & print sharing is turned on you shuold be able to browse to eachother.

if not from start > run type \\192.168.1.5 from the 192.168.1.6 PC or \\192.168.1.6 from the 192.168.1.5 PC

Hi,
I think your best answer is to find a friend with a desktop system and then Add your Hard drive from your defective system as a 2nd drive and then copy all your data over this way, with No mouse or USB working this is the best way.Hope this helps you.

you can... if you can get to the network properties... install or configure the tcp/ip settings and make sure that file and print sharing are on, and that the computer that currently has the files is sharing the entire drive... give one computer an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and the other one 192.168.1.2 and connect the crossover cable. You should be able to map to the old computer drive, if you use the adminstrator password.

You can use an ethernet cross cable. Assign static ip addresses to each pc; on pc 1 I suggest you use 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.2; on pc 2 use 192.168.1.3 for the IP address and the same subnet mask and default gateway as you did for pc 1.

Can you use a PS 2 mouse? It will be hard without a functioning mouse.

If the usb ports are dead, yoiu may wish to fix them.
