White flowers that open in the evening, with a purple streak in them. 3' tall and 3' wide, dark purple stems, large green leaves that look like holly leaves and evil throny seed pods. We thought it was a moonflower but can not seem to find the variety. Zone 5. Maybe, it is a weed but it is pretty. I have pics if you care to view them.

Sounds like Datura. Did you know it is an hallucinogen? Don't eat it, especially the roots. Yes they are a weed widespread over the US, mostly in the southern states. Here are some images for you:

Yes in fact, they say the moonflower opens up at night and closes during the day, that's why they call it the moonflower, pretty cool huh?

Moon flower has large soft green leaves - no thorns.
