Maison Ikkoku (mostly comedy, but a real romance that actually goes somewhere, fairly "old school" series)
Ai Yori Aoshi (pretty sweet and serious, though the main female character is a bit too subservient for my tastes)

i'm not an anime fan, but i was forced to watch fushigi yuugi and i loved it. it was really cute. also ayashi no ceres was cute, but a bit too much for me. i was forced to watch that as well.
