If you live in a rural area I can understand that, but I don't understand urban areas.

Probably because SUVs tend to do a better job of protecting their passengers in collisions, which are more likely in crowded urban areas.

Even so, I agree with you that it's kind of ridiculous to own an SUV if you never drive it anywhere other than on asphalt in the lowlands.

SUV's are often referred to as "Urban Assault Vehicles" because people feel safer in them. Just look at the motorcades for all of the politicians and celebrities and you'll see they're all in black Chevy Suburbans which seems to convey the message that the vehicles protect and insulate their important occupants. If you want to feel safe, protected and important in a hostile environment then that's probably a good model to follow.

I think the primary reason people drive the big SUVs in urban areas is that they have higher ground clearance and afford a better view of whats going on around you, particularly when your caught in a sea of traffic. Parking that tank is another issue.

that's my 2 cents...

Here in Colorado, they go to the country and use the 4wd thing about 3 times a year. Then they use it on snowy roads maybe 4 times a year.

Why do people drive Cadillacs or have houses way too big for their needs? Marketing!!
