I'm a senior in high school and I realize the time to choose a college major is coming quickly. For a long time i've been thinking of an English major, lately psychology is somewhat intriguing as well and studying the inner workings of people's minds seems interesting. What is a psych major all about? Where does it take you career-wise? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A psych major, much like an english major, does not set you up with a number of specialized job opportunities upon graduation. It's one of those "non-practical" majors, because hardly any jobs hire people just because they have a B.S. in Psychology.

If you do end up wanting to do a psych major, I highly encourage you to do one of the following:
1) major in something else as well that is more practical
2) plan on going to graduate school

Number 2 is a pretty good option. You can go to a school of social work, or get your PhD in Psychology so you can practice in a clinical setting (that is, be the type of psychologist who sees patients). If you get a PhD in non-clinical psychology, this usually takes you down the path of working in academia (researching/teaching at a university).

If you're looking for more information regarding what a psychology major is all about, I highly suggest reaching out to the department chair at a university near where you live (or a school you plan to apply to). If they care at all about their prospective students, they will gladly give you an overview of their program, or at least direct you to their school website. They can also more thoroughly answer the question of "What can I do with X major..."

A BS in psychology qualifies you to go on to your MS. The only thing you can get at the BS level are casemanagemet positions or a position with DHS that dont pay too well but will get you through grad school.

Do what I did! Go for your Liberal Arts subjects first and minor in Psych. I have a BS in Education and a Minor in Psych. Explore the subject a little more and see where it leads.

A degree in psychology will get you the same job you could get out of high school. Except you get to go to college for 5 years.

If you are planning on a bachelors in psychology, you will want to consider a master's level education on top of that.
