Keep it simple:

I’ve used a lot of the online scanners and have come to trust this one the most:

I have used Avast for several years now and recommend it because I used to use AVG and it has become AVGarbage! Get Avast here:

Anti - Virus :
Anti-Virus' are a personal preference type.
You know what you want it to do and when, so you
want to look for what you want the AV to do specifically.

Some people like using FREE AV's which are okay for
the price, which they're some good AV's out there
that are free, some are bad as well.

I guess it comes down to what program that you like
the best and which one has the most pretty colors
that entertain your eyes.

AVAST
"Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

avast! 4 Home Edition is a full-featured antivirus
package designed exclusively for home users and
non-commercial use. The company offers the Home
Edition free of charge, since, in our opinion, it
is possible to avoid global virus spreading by
efficient prevention; however, many users are not
able to or do not want to pay for antivirus software.
This page below will show you the most important
features of this program".

AVG
Is Free and is the more popular for those that need
something that can scan their computer at that time.
However, it uses resources like Norton and McAfee and
some others.

Norton
Is NOT FREE although they've been out for decades and
have a Trial Version. Also to remove their AV software,
you have to have their removal tool to remove it all
the way. Some newer systems have Norton installed
and every time that you uninstall it and reboot, it
wants to reinstall. Here is the link to remove
Norton:

McAfee
Is NOT FREE although they have been out for decades
and have a Trial Version

The best is PC Tools, I have tried the rest and this seems to be the better of the choices. www.pctools.com
There is a free version of both the AV and the Firewall.

AVG, which can be downloaded at http://www.grisoft.com is what your friend is referring to. It seems to be the most popular AV software that is free out on the market these days.

In addition to a firewall you must have full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.

All the following programs are free.
---------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one.

AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
