The ACLU has gone the way of the Unions. They have outlived their usefulness. Once upon a time, they had purpose, but now they chose what part of the constitution they want to defend. They will defend abortion rights, but not the right to bear arms. They will defend a Black person in the interest of justice, but leave the Duke players on the sidelines. How can they really care about Civil Liberties when they don't practice what they preach. They are nothing more than a PAC that takes cases for the clout, and to promote their liberal agenda.

More good than harm. Far more.
I look at the answers above and it makes me sad for the future of our country. Most of you obviously do not know anything about the ACLUor what it has done for Americans and their rights.
I do NOT always agree with some of the people they defend, but Ill defend to the death their constitutional right to do so.
Spend some time looking through their website
http://www.aclu.org/
You might be surprised that they do not always spend time defending Nambla members like some of you seem to think.
Is the ACLU of a "left leaning" mentality. Yes. Does that make them evil? No. Do I wish they would reign in some of their more radical arms? Yes. Should they be abolished? No. They need to have some "equal time" employees come in and change policy from within.

Their was a case the ACLU took up in NYC, a woman teacher became pregnant without a husband, she worked at a catholic private school. The school fired her, claiming she did not represent their moral values. I think that was good...
The rest of their cases often involve getting more rights for accused terrorists, defending bad people, and basically picking a fight with the government anywhere they can over silly little things. Many lawsuits alleging invasion of privacy, with little or no proof.
I like the idea of the organization, but they need a major overhaul. They do more harm than good.

The ACLU is only harmful if you believe that there is a select group of people who hold civil rights, while others do not. And if that were true, America would no longer be a Democracy.
But until that becomes true, the ACLU serves a vital purpose. It stands up for civil liberties. When America's civil liberties are gone, the ACLU will be gone as well.

As a Libertarian I did have confidence the ACLU have been given it precise some distance, way traditionally than they have been given it incorrect. yet then they took on the campaign of NAMBLA hustling youthful boys for a romp interior the hay as common "unfastened speech" and that extraordinarily lots signaled the tip of that. they have because stepped forward into frequently yet another leftist homestead organ. I gave up my club years in the past, yet apparently nevertheless get the occasional mailed pitch and get in touch with call (it rather is me with the instant postpone, ACLU telephone monetary business enterprise manners).

The concept is good. The implementation leaves much to be desired.
The ACLU has become more concerned with what could happen and less about what has happened.
And the fact they have earned the nickname Anti Christian Liberals Union hasn't helped my opinion of them.

I think they started in the right direction but latley they are going too far with their views of the law.
When they want a cross that was standing their in memory of the vets who die for years all of sudden is not violating the law and got taken down.
Or when board members are not allow to speak in public when they disagree with other members.
I do have other cases I think they have lost their way.

Fly over is 100% correct, their biggest flaw is Nambla and trying to shut down organizations that oppose Nambla and their likes. Perverts Don't have a right to harm and take advantage of children. That's not free speech nor is it a right! It is a shame they defend those who take great pride in afflicting others and call it a civil right. They are anarchists.

If they disbanded tomorrow, America would be a much better place.
Like we need our tax dollars being spent in frivolous law suits because a school calls the winter break "Christmas break".
