Sometimes in the summer, outside, I hear something I can only describe as a loud buzz. It starts by crescendoing into a loud continuous buzz until it stops after about 5 or 6 seconds. Can anyone tell me what animal or insect generates this noise?

You're probably hearing the cicada. Very loud bugs. They can produce cricket-like sounds up to 106 decibels. That's about the sound equal to the front rows of a rock concert! The pain threshold is 130 dB, and normal conversation is at 60 dB (the sound scale is not linear though, so you can't say its halfway between the two, but those are just for reference). Anyway, they come out in the summer.

Either that or you live near power lines.

Cicadas or Locusts.
This is the year for 17 year locusts. They die off soon, after laying their eggs for the the next time.
