I think you talk about boondoggle, craftlace, gimp or lanyards. (All the same.)
If so, have a look on the site of the Boondoggle man:

This site tells you the basic cobra stitch.
Now it you look at this site:

You see that the square knot is the same thing.
But here you also see the turning version.

I do not know if the Boondoggle man is going round one way all the way, in a spiral, but you can do a few knots one way and next go the other way.
Say 5 knots each way will do nicely.

Lanyards and macramé, right? Regular cobra stitch seems to be a series of square knots over a flat core, usually two additional laces or cords. If you do all Granny Knots, it will twist instead.
