How is this fair? They want to increase that Federal Excise tax on cigarettes by $1.00 per pack to pay for healthcare for all children. Why should only smokers pay for this? This implies that children of non-smokers get a freebie. If a smoker and non-smoker each have no kids, why should only the smoker pay for something that applies to everyone? Why not tax something most everyone uses - like milk, or pop, or bread, or shampoo?

Fair or not the government and the tabacco industry has proven that no matter what the cost people will not quit smoking. It seems logical to the government that a large amount of cash needed for any reason can come from a very reilable source, the smoker.

I guess they're saying that us smokers pose more of a health threat to kids with the second hand smoke thing. I agree though, it should be a tax on something we all use. Just because a parent doesn't smoke doesn't mean they dont do things to harm their kids' heath.

I am not a smoker, but I agree with you. It seems a BIT biased! I don't mind people smoking around me, and it's just gone TOO far. (BARS!) I mean, people who go to a bar for a beer naturally want a ciggie; they go together ( I used to only smoke when I drank beer) but to have the patrons of the bar go OUTSIDE to smoke? Stupid. This country is getting more and more puritanical. Sorry about my rant. I think this is totally unfair! It seems like a morality issue or something. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

I have to agree, its not fair, if you gonna tax something why not spread it around, if you want to add taxes to cigarettes why not other no essential items like liquor or beer, higher taxes for companies that pollute the most, how about the auto manufactures that will not get the emissions levels lowered. Their is plenty to go around, but no one will rise up and say anything...we have turned into a bunch of wimps fallowing and bitching instead of doing!

Sooner or later, smokers are going to quit. Then, they'll have to think up a new way to fund things.
If my husband & I were still smoking now, it would cost us over $25 per day. I have saved a whole pile of money by quitting.
www.QuitNet.com is a great support site for those who are quitting.

Wow. I'm a proud ex-smoker, but I would never "make" another smoker pay for my kids' health care. I quit because my kids both have bad allergies and asthma, and (apparantly) it wasn't so good for me either, lol.
I think they're just trying to get smokers to quit, but I don't think it will work. They have to want to quit. I dont condemn people who smoke, because I used to be there too. I just have to speak for my kids to my friends who smoke, because they are allergic to cigarette smoke. I am very polite about it, and the most of them know about my kids allergies.
Sorry this got so long winded. Hope this answers your question.

I'm a smoker and I agree with you, it should be every ones job to help with the need for insurance. I also know adults that can't get insurance in NY because they make too much money to qualify for any assistance but they can't afford private insurance, I know children need insurance but adults need it as well... When I heard about it a couple months ago I called my senators office and gave them my opinion which they didn't seem to like

well deserved. your saying youll be paying for some kid thats not your but your smoking in public places is affecting the child of a parent that does not smoke. for example i have seen parents light up in the playground, other kids besides yours are there also and their parents dont smoke, so yeah you and all the other smokers should pay
