I have a '94 Saturn LS and the speedometer and odometer aren't working.

I'm trying to fix this on my own without having to go to a mechanic. I have looked at the fuses and they all look good with no apparent breaks in contact. So I am not sure where to look next.

Does anyone have an idea for me to try?

Nope, not digital, at least not like a digital read out.

I mentioned fuses because I thought most things in the car were controlled by a fuse... lol.

Okay, I got under the car and located the speed sensor and cable.

The cable looks in good working order w/ no breaks or tears. I have the sensor on order.

Is it as easy to replace as it looks? Just unscrew it from the tranny and replace it with the new one?

Might check your VSS vehicle speed sensor, i'm pretty sure it's on the transmission or maybe on the inside of the front wheel.

Check the cable.

Speedometer and odometer work from the same pickup.

Both are not working so it is something commen to both.

Don't think that a 94 Saturn is all electronic and even an all electronic has to have something to pick up tire rotation.

Start with the end of the cable near the wheel/transmission as it will be subject to the most vibration. Good luck.

If it's digital display, likely because you mentioned checking fuses, look in the front tire, passenger side for a speed sensor, or it may be plugged into the transmission also, I can't remember off hand and don't have the book handy. Anyway, somewhere it has a speed sensor that needs to be either plugged back in, or replaced.

You're either looking for a speedo cable or a speed sensor.

The speedo cable would run from the transmission to the fire wall. If the speedo cable is broken, you'll get the problem your experiencing.

The speed sensor is usually hooked up to the transmission and transmits electrical signals to the gauges.

there's a speed sensor that goes bad on those cars, its located on the bottom rear part of he transmission,i think it only has two wires that go to it,but that's usually what makes them stop working, there kind of expensive,so have it checked or scanned to make sure that's what it is,but 99% of the time thats the cause of them not working, good luck on it.
