As a teenager, I always put knowledge before friendships, thus intellectually, I was ahead of my peers. Although I've never acted snobby or condescending towards others, I still have a difficult time relating to others my age. In several instances, people have bolstered my social ineptness just to undermine my intelligence ("you have brains but you don't have friends").

On some minor occasions, I have played the "average jane" role in order to fit in at school. But I always ended up hating myself for that. Education is what makes me happy--it is my passion and my purpose--and I refuse to sacrifice that for anybody. However, friendships are very important to me as well, and I don't want to lose out on them anymore.

(P.S. I am 19 years old and I'm about to start college soon).

When you start college you won't need to "dummy down", which I would never recommend to begin with. You will be given lots of opportunity to meet people who are of like intelligence and form friendships based on those things you have in common (and not on something which is false). Good luck and God Bless.

There's going to be a whole different world out ther in college, and you'll probably find more people in the same situation as you're in there. Don't play down your abilities since high-school relationships tend to fade pretty quickly as people find other things to do after graduation and new friends and such. Be all you can be and don't worry

It is never ok to try and be someone you are not, no matter what the reason is. Hopefully with you entering college you will make some good friends. People who point out that you are smart but friendless are just jealous of your intelligence. Any time anyone makes fun of someone else it is to hide their own insecurities and try to keep from facing them. Good luck sweetie.

i also am the smart kid, and always have been, but i never studied or anything...you can be smart and have friends, i was always part of the popular crowd, just go out and party a little, and fill the role. you know, i dont tell everybody that my IQ is 165 or that my SATs were 2180, but i let my intelligence show during a discussion, people will like you for it...go experience life

Don't worry about it, you're about to start college and then everything will change! The social landscapes of high school and college couldn't be more different, chances are you'll be quite popular at Uni...just don't be too full of yourself. Good luck!
