Since I've recently spend months in Uk as a visitor:

Lincoln Castle (and go to the cathedral its killer)

Newark Castle (is free and a great picture but there is no inside)

Nottingham Castle

Southwell Minster Cathedral (is very very cool but you have to pay four pounds to take pictures of the inside) It is free to look and you will want to take pictures if you see it inside.

-Also check out the Work House in Southwell, its interesting.

St Johns Church in Mansfield (free and they will offer coffe or tea before 3pm)
Newark - St Mary of Magdalane Church (free)

AVOID Bolsover Castle - Looks great on the outside but it is ruined on the inside. It would be great to take a picture without having to pay the fee due to the fact that its not worth looking at the inside. They have totally ruined it.

Arundel castle is great. Big, and nice to see.
You can find castles in almost every town, but be careful not to suffer from the ABC syndrome.
(An other Bloody Caste, An Other Bloody Church, An other Bloody Cathedral!)

So spread the load, do not do all castles you see, and be aware that there is more to see.

All along the English-Welsh border you find castles, on both sides.
On the Scottish border the same. Although most castles here seem to be smaller.

Where ever you go, google the name of the town and county and castle, so you know what is near.
