By survival skills, do you mean 'trapped in the wilderness, need to stay alive', or 'skills that are very useful in day to day living'?

In the first version, 'wilderness skills', first aid is a key skill, and many parts of CPR are vital (such as how to deal with choking). However, CPR is rarely effective itself in reviving a person with a bad heart so you do it to keep the victim alive until rescue arrives- if you are alone on a desert island, that may take a while! :-)

As a life skill, it is vital. If someone near you has a heart attack, it is unlikely they will survive without help while waiting for an ambulance. Survival rates of heart attacks drop about 10% a minute, and most ambulance services run 7-10 minutes. The victims best chance comes if someone nearby can do CPR until rescuers arrive.

Yes, Cardio Pulmonary Resuctitation,CPR in short, is definitely a part of survival skill.Cardio means Heart,Pulmonary means lungs. In case these vital functions cease for any reason, one can die within 5-8 minutes.Hence to maintain these two vital functions, the heart needs to be made to pump blood to maintain blood supply to vital organs like brain etc which starts dying if blood supply is stopped for 8 minutes.Likewise, the blood being pumped by the heart also needs to be oxygenated for which external means of introducing air into the lungs is done.By this method individuals can be kept alive for periods till medical help is available.

If you did have to live in the wild, and survive of the land. Having equipment is important, but the knowledge I believe is far more important. There are many techniques for finding direction, time of day, starting a fire, etc. The real key is knowing for instance what is safe to eat or drink or not safe. One simple mistake on color or leave shape could mean your life. It also depends on what exactly you are willing to do to survive. It is far easier to just lie down and give up when something does not go your way, but a far greater task to have the will to keep trying, even when not successful. I believe this is the most important key to survival.
