Birth contol medicines have never made me gain any weight. I've used Ortho-tri-cyclin low, Yazmin, the nuva ring, the patch, and depo.
I think the Ortho-tri-cyclin low was the best. I didn't notice any mood changes, and it didn't make me feel any different.

Yazmin made me quite moody and it also caused nausea.

The nuva ring disgusted me, you have one ring, and you keep it "in there" all month, you insert it and remove it yourself.

I also had problems with the patch. It can cause blood clots. It reminded me of a bandaid. You put it on for a week, and lint sticks to it and it looks dirty. It would also come off or stick to my jeans.

The depo shot has many side effects. After prolonged use it causes bone marrow loss. Possible Side effects:: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/depoprovera_ad.htm
Talk to your doctor about it, and have him/her go over the pros and cons of multiple birth control methods. If you're still breast feeding, it's not recomended to use oral contraceptives. You and your doctor should decide what is best for you.

That is a myth. I was told that when you go on birth control you can gain up to 20 lbs. I went on it about 8 years ago and was on it for 5 years. I never gained one pound from being on it. Yes, the pill does in fact, change your mood. It is hormones, remember, so even in its smallest dosage, it will altar the way your body normally reacts to things. You may notice more breast swelling at first as well. One of the better qualities is that your periods become more regular. There are many types of birth control pills. Your doctor can best tell you which brand would be better suited for you. I would not recommend pills that only give you a period 4x per year. For some reason that does not sound healthy. Also, know that when you start on the pill, you must use an alternate method of BC for at least a month until your body has acclimated to the pill and it is at its fullest strength. Good luck.

Every single birth control system has its pro's and con's. Nothing will make you fat, except putting food into your mouth and getting pregnant!
Religion plays a role in the method you choose, cost plays a role in your choice, convenience plays a major role, and probably most importantly, are the potential medical, life-threatening side effects of some systems.
I've not known of birth control methods to affect a womans mood, but the trace amounts of hormones used in the "pill" shouldn't even be noticable.
By the way, after having a baby, you will look a tad heavier, and a tad out of condition, but with regular exercise, and watching what you eat, you can get back into shape. Just look at all the beautiful women out there with children.
Having additional children, especially when you aren't able to handle the responsibility emotionally, financially, or any other demand they put on parents, is a big mistake, especially if you have the ability to choose to not have additional children.
Good luck, I wish you the very best with your newborn baby. Give him/her your all, and try to provide all that will make him/her healthy and stable.

Birth control pills contain ZERO calories, so they in and of themselves do NOT make you gain weight. Its the cravings that sometimes are caused by the BCPs that cause weight gain. As long as you are VERY aware of what you're putting in your mouth, weight gain should be minimal.
The pill can do different things, but not every woman will experience every side effect, and some experience none at all. The most commonly reported problems are:
Headache, dizziness, nausea and/or vomiting, irritability, bloating, water retention, and reduced libido.
If any of the symptoms become intolerable, then talk to your doctor; often changing the formulation will alleviate the symptoms.

First of all, birth control pills are a form of artificial hormones that trick your body into thinking that it is already pregnant. So yes, you will gain weight on birth control pills and yes, they do mess with your cycles and your moods, and will typically aggravate PMS symptoms.
You should only stay on birth control pills when you are absolutely in a solid relationship, having sex regularly, and must NOT get pregnant. I wouldn't recommend it for more than a couple of years at most.
For weight loss, stay away from prepared foods, eat more raw fruits and veggies, and completely stay away from anything soy.

Birth Control in and of itself does not make you gain weight. The hormones in birth control could increase your appetite, so you have to eat healthy ( which you should be doing anyway - especially after a baby!!!!). The type of birth control that is best for you will have to be decided by you and your health care provider. There are pros and cons to each method, and some only contain certain types and amounts of hormones. At the consultation appointment, they will get certain information from you that will help make this decision a bit easier. You may have to try a couple of different methods before you find the right one. Remember, birth control does just that - prevents pregnancy - it will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV.

They can make you gain a few extra pound and you may notice your moods change slightly. But this is just an intial side effect, so everything should level off after awhile. There are a lot of new pills on the market. Check with your ob gyn to see what would work out best for you. I believe Yasmin (sp) is one of those ones that helps control weight gain.

Yeah I gained quite a bit and ive been using them 2 years now. Its nice that they make your periods lighter and have less cramps. I would use the traditional 28 day packs and not anything new out. There has been a lot of stuff going on with patches causing problems and the shot too. Don't ever get an IUD because i know a couple of people that never got pregnant again because of it. My mood has been better since being on them because it is controlling hormones, so I feel less spastic most of the time.

I suppose it varies with each person. I have been on the pill for a while and no weight gain here. I was also on a few years back for several years straight and again, no gain. However, I switched one time to the patch and that was a big mistake. I gained weight it seemed like overnight. I stopped that right away and went back to the pill. I use the Alese BC.

They don't make you fat themselves. They do however, get you hungry, so if you are one that doesn't handle food well and eats everything that unhealthy when shes hungry then you WILL gain weight. other than that birthcontrol pills can def change your mood a lilttle, they can also cause your breast to become sore.
however, they sare said to help prevent ovarian cancer so thats a BIG plus.
speak to your doctor about which pill is best for you because every woman is different.
i know several people who take YAS and they love it. They say its side affects arent as large as the other ones, and it helps with PMS.

Ignore the first response. The hormones in Birth control do make you gain wait. I gained twelve pounds the first month I was on the pill, but with a healthy diet, and a little excercise, I've lost it all. You don't gain excessive amounts of wait, but talk to the doctor who is prescribing it to you. Weight gain, break through bleeding, and slight nausea are all possible side effects of the pill.
