While doing paperwork for your hospital stay, they will ask if you want to get him a SS card while doing his birth certificate. After a few weeks, it will be mailed to you. My son's took less than a month. As to insurance, do you qualify for medicaid? I added my son to my health insurance and now I can barely make ends meet! Don't be ashamed to apply for state help. Your son's health should come before your pride.

Often you will receive this information at the hospital, but if you don't you can apply once you have the birth certificate. Just call or visit a local social security office and request the paperwork to apply for the baby's card. They will need the birth certificate to process the paperwork, but you might be able to get the paperwork before the baby is born, so you have it when you need it. As for you health insurance, it would depend on the type of policy you have, if it is already a family plan there should be little or no additional cost, if it is a single plan there will be an increase to your rates. Ask your human resource personnel at you company, then if it is too costly, look into another policy, but usually it is cheaper to add it to the policy you currently have then to start a new policy.

Hi and congrats. The hospital where you deliver will provide the paperwork for you new baby for his SS card. They will even send it out for you. Obviously this can not be done until he is born. You would recieve his card in the mail maybe 2-3 weeks after he is born. As far as insurance, the hospital social worker may be able to help you find a low cost insurance. I don't know what state you live in but many states have programs for low cost or free insurance for children, if you qualify. You could call your local county office building today to find out what is available. Your personal insurance should cover the cost of the babies stay in the nursery until you are discharged from the hospital. But you may want to call them to double check that as well. Call the social worker where you plan on delivering to find out about insurance for your unborn. good luck and don't stress over it or you might be delivering today!

You will fill out all the paperwork in the hospital and should receive birth certificate and SS card within 8 weeks.

Personally, you should just add him to your insurance. You get what you pay for and your child will be going to the doc quite a bit the first year (1 mo., 2 mo., 4 mo., 6 mo., 9 mo., and 12 mo.) You need good insurance that will cover all immunizations, well baby check ups, and any illnesses that may occur).

The hospital will give you a packet of information to fill out after you child is born. You fill it out before you leave and it includes info to get the social security card and to file a birth certificate. I got my son's ss card about three weeks after he was born but they tell you to expect to wait up to 13 weeks. Look into programs with the state for health insurance for your child, based on your income you may get assistance or free medical care.

The hospital or birthing center has all the info that you need to fill out in order to get all those things for your baby. SS card should arrive in two weeks along with birth certificate. you can get state health insurance if you make under a certain amount.

The nurses at the hospital will give you all the paperwork to fill out for the social security card and it will be sent to you a couple weeks after you get home. As for insurance I would check with your local department of human services to see if you qualify to get the baby on medicaid. It's great for kids when you can't afford something else for them.

We were able to apply for a social security card for our son right in the hospital.

As for insurance, it depends on where you live and your income. Contact your city or county children's services (in California there is a program called First 5 California). They have tons of information and can point you in the right direction.

When my son was born, I was laid off (nice, huh?). We didn't qualify for low income assistance, but were able to get Blue Shield for $6 a month with a program for people who have a slightly higher income.

Whether or not you add your son to your insurance, check into Flex Spending (if your employer offers it). Since you put money into it pre-tax, it saves you a LOT of money on co-pays, medication (even over the counter stuff), etc.

When you are in the hospital they will have you fill out the forms for the birth certificate and the SSN. You will get the SS card in the mail a few weeks later. You have to actually go to the courthouse in the county you live to get the official birth certificate.
