Do I really need a cable needle or can I just slip the stitches on any spare needle?

You can use any spare needle to slip your stitches. You just have to remember to slip them to a second needle so that they are in the right position to stitch. Cable needles are a convenience. If you are doing a lot of cabling I suggest purchasing a set of cable needles the cost is less than $3.00. But if you are just practicing the stitch go with what you have. Have fun stitching.

If the cables are narrow, like only one or two stitches and your work is loose you can fiddle without a cable needle.
But a cable needle is so much easier to use when you are just starting, a full length needle a pain to use because of its length.
Worth the money it costs.

Yes, you need a cable needle. When I knit, aran isle sweater patterns are my favorite. If I would use double pointed needles, I'm sure they would fall out, what with all the twisting and turning.
Using a large pin would work in a pinch, but you might as well use the real thing. And using a spare needle is much too long.

I have had the same success cabling with just a double pointed needle. This allows you to slip your stitches on either side of the needle.

When I've done cables I use a large safety pin or one of my trusty crochet hooks. It's really a pain so I don't do cables that often.

Christmas is only a few months away. That would be a great small item to add to your wish list.
