because marriage has become a government union and has lost nearly all of its holyness because of this.

Why do you have to be married to have sex?
Most christians weren't even allowed to marry until just a few hundred years ago, as a matter of fact, look up the history of the "F" word if you don't believe me.
The Christian church finally adopted the practice of marriage, from pagans (like they did with everything else), originally people usually only got married after the woman was pregnant, so sex before marriage was completely acceptable.
You're also asking this question in the LGBT section, in this country, and most of the world they can't get married, even if they wanted to. So the only option left to them, is a relationship invloving sex but not marriage.
Their are a host of reasons why people have sex, few of them having anything to do with marriage. People have sex because we are biologically programmed to have sex, Monogamy is not in our genes.
Lastly, why do you care what other people are doing? It's their life, their decision, their body, let them have it.

Honestly I think that whole no sex before marriage thing is a big load of BS. First of all, I'm not even allowed to get married so there's no point in waiting. Second of all, marriage isn't special at all. Why do you need an official document to express your love towards someone? Like a piece of paper is really supposed to mean much.

Because people would like to have a special connection with that person before they are married, and if that connection is strong after sexual intercourse, it would seem more right to be married afterward.

Because they want to, everyone's point of view on sex before marriage is different. Not all people think that having sex before marriage is a sin!

Because sex is the most ordinary thing in the world.
Sex understands everyone, a language doesn't.

Because it's a basic human need, up there with food, sleep, and shelter. I'm sorry, but how abstinence-only programs deny that simple fact and expect teenagers to go without and then refuse to teach safe-sex methods is a sad, sad joke. I once heard abstinence-only programs compared to a potty-training program that teaches kids to just "hold it in." Give me a damn break.

It's they're, not there. Oy.
Well, honey, I think when people Don't have sex until they're married, that's a religious or personal choice. My "religion" doesn't have anything against premarital sex, nor do I choose to wait, so I'm not going to!
I mean, I didn't! :)
