The explanation of karma can differ per tradition. Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. The results or "fruits" of actions are called karma-phala. Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward; karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative

karma is a Sansrit word that means "action" and comes from the verb root "kri" to do, to act. The word relates to the idea that actions have reactions. Life itself is a complicated, interdependent stream of cause and effect. The idea evolved--which we see in many major religions--that there are consequences to one's actions so that a person needed be mindful about what he was doing so that the consequences didn't come back to bite him. The person also had to reflect on his present situation and wonder whether it was the effect of something that he had done in the past. Then these ideas also got mixed up into ideas about reincarnation and merit and demerit, and rationales about why a person got stuck with a certain job or good or bad luck or cultural status (which is all "nice" cultural BS).
Karmas --that is, actions that have reactions for better or worse--are going on all the time. In fact, your own body and mind are "karma" -- the result of some action. One deals with "karma" basically by have moral fortitude.

I believe Karma is not instantaneous. That is to say you do something bad to someone and shortly something bad happens to you. I do not believe that is Karma. I believe that is the Universe balancing things out. Sounds the same but I believe it is different.
I believe Karma deals with the afterlife and reincarnation. How you lived your life in this existance affects where your station is in the next life. Ok...have you ever met someone that seemed to live a charmed life? Things always seem to come easy for them. I believe this is because they were a wonderful person who did good things for their fellow man etc in their previous life. Then there are others who couldn't catch a break if they tried. I think those people are being punished for their previous incarnation's misdeeds.
I also believe Karma is cumulative. That means 2, 3, or 4 incarnations' actions are with you today in this life.

My favorite saying is........
"Karmas a B**ch!!"
I have on a T-shirt - go figure.
But as the saying goes "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Karma is a name for existental energy ie, actions are caused by equal and opposite reactions.
For example, if you yell at your friend, who by the way was having a good day, and you made him/her upset, and in turn he/she goes to work and starts yelling at employees who otherwise would have been having a good day, and in return were rude to their customers or weren't performing their duties as well as they did before because your friend put out his frustrated energies onto others that you pushed onto him/her. If the reverse was your friend was in a bad mood and you joked them into a better mood and they went to work and did the same thing with other employees it would make things at the work place better. Ect ect ect.
Karma is a term in the middle east that refers to the quote I gave and is an expression of reactions of your own accord that reflects on others.
But....."Karma can and is a "B**ch".

Karma is a part of natural law - it is happening all the time - for every cause we set in motion - there is an effect.

Karma is constantly balancing. It just is not evident until something with a large swing toward good or bad happens.
