When people die young it adds a certain mystique to everything they did when they were alive and it tends to make them seem a bit more important and interesting.
In some cases it is deserved, but I definitely think we make legends out of somewhat ordinary people at times.

To an extent. It just depends I guess. Marilyn would've been remembered the same way you remember Monica Lewinsky or however you spell that broad's name. Because she had an affair with the president and she married a famous baseball player. Elvis got famous for is signature dance move and the hair. But I guess you could say that their popularity would decrease with time as the knowledge of their lives stays behind. And I don't know who Kurt Cobain is...

kurt cobain will probably end up like axle rose. and can you imagine a 70 year old marilyn monroe? and Elvis will never get out of Las Vegas. River Phoenix though will be one of the greatest actors if he lived. and so will James Dean

To an extent. Many celebrities that receive much attention in death were also quite popular in life. Unknown actors and entertainers that die still receive little attention in death. However, I do agree somewhat. Look at Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. They were both popular around the same time, both gorgeous and both great actresses. However, Marilyn Monroe is more known to younger generations than is Elizabeth Taylor. Most people know who Elizabeth is, but it seems that fewer are familiar with her work. Sure, in old age, Elizabeth seems to have gotten a lot of attention that, in my opinion, amounts more to lampooning her behavior, while the attention that Marilyn receives is more in memoriam.

Well, they would still be popular, at least, Marily and Elvis, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, James Dean, etc, but I don't think there would be as large a cult following though. Kurt Cobain I think would have died out (pun not intended) sooner than the others, I think.

Not "certain" celebs but rather "most" of them.
Few have lasting fame and most end up dieing an obscure death after years in the old actors home...penniless and forgotten. Others spend their lives trying to recapture that fleeting popularity that has long waned or just trying to make ends meet and keep up the "hollywood" appearance.
