Hi there! I don't know if you're talking about communication in terms of sociology and psychology, but i can tell you what's communication in Business studies.
For businesses, "communication" can have several meanings. It can be related to the company/business itself, and be either internal or external.
Internal communication is about how the different services of a company can communicate ( for example, the marketing services with the accountants, or, the decisions taken by the boards of Directors that have to be communicated and explained to the different services of the company, etc. ) For a big corporation, internal communication can be a link between the headquarters and the several branches etc. The purpose of Communication in these cases refer to the staff and personnel only, it's not customer oriented.
On the other hand, external communication is about telling people who/ what is the business. Communicating can be explaining to the people what are the values/visions/goals of a company, for example, a sustainable company, or a company working with fair trade may highlight these points a lot in order to raise awareness and good image. Or, the business can underline and communicate on the possible opportunities and rewards to work there. For example, if a company is recruiting, it may set up a communication campaign to emphasize how rewarding is a position there, or how exciting can be the possibilities of evolution within the company etc.
In these two cases, communication differs from Promotion, which is rather communicating on the products or the services offered to the customers. Promotion is a form of communication, but it's not only about the company, it's also about what the company is doing. In this case, promotion is like explaining to the (possible) customers, what are the intrinsic qualities of a product/service.
In management, it's highly recognised that a successful organization is a business that has a good communication, both internal and external, because it leads to a good image for the outside world and a strong culture in the inside.
I hope i've helped you in some way, and sorry for my english which is not my native language. I should try and improve my " communication skills " ;)

In general, a communication degree involves studying how people communicate with one another. It's a relatively recent kind of degree that grew out of elocution, rhetoric, or speech degrees over the past half-century or so.
Your course work will probably include a basic course (either public speaking or a survey of the discipline in most places), plus interpersonal communication, small group communication, organizational communication, persuasion, communication theory, intercultural communication, mass media, and possibly some work in the closely-related area of theatre.
Upon completion of the BA, comm. majors go into a wide range of careers. One of them that's on the upswing is public relations (and if that's for you, you should plan for it by getting PR and business courses as part of the major). Corporate training is another career that makes use of this degree.
Many comm. majors go on to graduate school; those who get to the PhD (like me) mostly wind up teaching at college level.
