we have 3 leather punch tools and rivets but need directions on how to use them.

By leather punch tools, I assume you mean these:

as opposed to one of these:

in which case, you hit them with a hammer, driving it into the leather. It's better to back up the leather with some thick scrap leather, a block of wood, or a rubber mat, so as not to dull the punch.

By rivets, I again assume you mean these:

in which case, you'll need one of these kits:

http://tandyleatherfactory.com/products.asp?number=8105-00

Which you hit with a hammer, and the anvil supports the other rivet end.

Do you have the backs to go on the rivets? I have done this in the past but not very well. With mine I had to punch the hole, put the rivet in the hole with the back on the reverse side and then hammer firmly. I don't know, however, if your punch is like mine, so I can't be too precise.
