It would be a disadvantage as it will most likely:
1) Not function due to being deformed
2) Be in the incorrect place
3) Knock off your balance
4) Physically unappealing to look at
But yes, there have been people born with 3 legs - it has occured in animals too (having multiple number of limbs).

Ive heard of one guy who was born with 3 legs and 2 completely functional reproductive systems. I think it wouldnt be an advantage as human beings would need a huge physiologic makeover to be faster with 3 legs.

It happens, but the babies don't usually survive long without medical care, and the third (usually shrunken or deformed) limb is usally operated on and removed shortly after birth. This most usually involves complications with twins or siamese twins during pregnancy, where one of the foetuses fails to develop properly and attaches to the other. It can happen in the animal kingdom too (lambs, dogs, etc.), but again, those born with extra legs don't usually live that long without medical care. It would only be an advantage if you wanted a career in the circus as a freak show.

There are many miss-formed babies born. The worst ones we do not hear about. Having three legs has the advantage that you can hold a camera more steady.

Yes. It's a partially absorbed twin sibling. No advantage to it; in fact, it'd be a disadvantage. We're built for being bipeds. Having another leg would just get in the way.

A lamb was recently born with seven legs.
There is a book by Stephan Themerson about someone with three legs and a roller skate on their middle foot.
The probability of this being a successful mutatiion is quite small.

A baby (named Destiny) was born with a third leg in Detroit in June 2005.
Doctors performed surgery to remove the leg that was actually an undeveloped twin, according to the report.
"What destiny had was a twin that was attached to her, but really only the sort of lower half of that other twin," pediatric surgeon Dr. Daniel Teitelbaum said. "So, a leg, her hips, her pelvis."
The baby's mother said she did not know that Destiny had a third leg until after birth.
"After the NIC unit came down and looked at her, that's when I found out that there was an extra leg attached to her," Destiny's mother Lisa Lunsford said.

Eric Bristow must have been born with them. I keep hearing about him winning his Darts Championships over 3 legs.

Yes, Juan (or Jean) Baptista dos Santos of Portugal was born c. 1843 with a small third leg. It did not provide any advantage; it lacked mobility and he had to bind it to his right thigh to keep it out of the way. He also had two penises and two (or three) scrota; both sets of genitalia were functional.
