The hopes and dreams of his people. It is only later in life that camels realize there is no hope for them, at least not until their Deliverer comes.

In days past, and handed down from generation to generation, is the story (although some would say prophecy) of the One who would come and deliver the camels to a better place; an oasis within an oasis so they would never have to see sand again, and would never be used as beasts of burden by the humans (which in their camel-language translates as "the giant fleshy tick that rides on our backs and makes our lives hell").

The story is told by parent camels to their children, and when they have families of their own, to their own children. It is compared to our stories of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, in that the Deliverer isn't real, just a story. But there are Orthodox camels who believe that the story is true and will happen one day. All of this is pure speculation until the camel Deliverer actually ccomes and frees his (or her) people.

Biologically speaking though, it's filled with fat, which allows them to travel long distances without needing water.

The humps are merely food reserves, and the fat and flesh contained within are absorbed as nutrition when food is scarce.
