We were there 3 weeks ago. Try to avoid the weekends, much less traffic during the week.
September is my favorite month for weather. It will be pleasantly warm during the day and cool at night. Take a light jacket.
Roaring Forks Motor Trail is well worth a couple of hours (or more) to explore. GSMNP is next door.
We saw Magic Beyond Belief in PF, very good show and reasonably priced at $20 with kids free.
Eat at Bennet's BBQ and the Old Mill Restaurant. Bennet's has a fabulous fresh salad bar and corn on the cob. There are dozens of pancake houses, and a Krispy Kreme is you start craving hot, fresh donuts.
Shopping is fun, but beware the 11% sales tax. There is a great Christmas shop where I always make a point to stop.
You can ride the trolly almost everywhere if the traffic gets too bad.
Have fun!

You can expect 80's weather. It will still be warm.
There is a ton of stuff to do there! Contact the Chamber of Commerce/Tourist Board and ask for your free visitors packet. The packet contains free maps, information and coupons which save a ton of money.
You will find lots to do out of the visitors packet. And you can find tons to do just by driving down the main strips in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Dollywood is the main Pigeon Forge attraction, but there's all kinds of side-of-the-road unique places.
In Gatlinburg there's the Space Needle observation tower with arcade and laser tag. Ober Gatlinburg has a tramway, alpine slide, some neat other stuff to do. There's a downtown sky lift, the Guinness World Records Museum and Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, Ripley's Aquarium (really good).
There's a new thing (since I have been) on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge called the Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride which sounds really interesting. Lots of shopping both places. Lots of go-carts and mini-golf. Lots of dinner shows, such as Dixie Stampede, The Comedy Barn. Different musical shows all the time with different singers.
For a slower pace, go check out the Smoky Mountains!
You won't run out of things to do, for sure.

We went there a few years ago and loved it. Dollywood is close and you have to go there. A drive through the Smokie mountains is a must too if you love scenery. Alan Jackson has a restaurant with some of his cars in there. Great food too.
September gets into the mid-80's daytime and 50's evenings so you'll need a jacket.
Here's a great website that will answer a lot of your questions.

Two things you should do. Drive up the foot hills parkway the most amazing views, also I would suggest an early morning horse back ride in the smoky mountains you will find flyers every were for that. One thing not to do the chimney tops trial in the forest it is 2miles up hill steep very steep, you are so worn out at the top you don't appreciate the view. Better views in the car on the foot hills highway.

AND if you drive thru the Smoky Mountains National Park for the scenery, on the other side is Cherokee, North Carolina which has a Harrah's Casino.
