I know what you mean because sometimes I post an answer that I know has absolutely no chance of being best answer because it is not what the asker wants to hear; but, for each question answered two points! They add up. Also sometimes I can help people because a lot of the questions I answer have to do with computers.

You're right. I'm sure when some staff at Yahoo were dreaming up this clusterschmuck idea, they didn't count on what it's become.
I always wonder why people pick the answers they do.
"If I pick hers, will she go out with me?" always runs through my mind when I see some of the answers people give that are selected as best...even if they suck as far as answers go.
Madness! Madness I tells ya!

I want to answer questions because I want to have more points (in Yahoo! Answers), and I want to help other people. Just by answering this question gives benefit to both the one asking the question and to the one answering it (me!) :).

People are social and we all want to be heard and valued.
I suspect that people who really want an answer select the most logical answer.
A person who just wants to hear the answer he or she wants is always going to do that anyway.
I like to read other people's answers because it helps me know my society better and see where my opinions match up or don't.
Sometimes I change my mind. I think it helps me grow.

Alot of it is to kill boredom...I answer alot of questions just to give my oppinion and even if people choose the wrong answer there are other people reading the answers who are afraid to post the questions so you may be helping someone else out!

Sometimes people just want attention and they don't want real answers. On P&S you find a lot of cheeky answers to questions. I don't mind them so much. But when you are answering a valid question and someone answers IDK and gets best answer because they have chosen their own best answer when it went to voting that just gets me. How could you even feel good about that.

The point is: because they're fun, and they earn you points. What more needs to be said?
