It would be difficult, if you have no experience working with electricity, and yes as mentioned dangerous. More people are killed by 110 vac, than any other voltage so be extra cautious.
I know a couple people who have done some very bad wiring, which could have led to a fire, or someone getting electrocuted if they were touching a light that was energized. One of these was an engineer, so you can't depend on a persons level of schooling.
It's better left to someone who really knows electricity. A licensed electrician can be expensive, but worth it if you don't know someone you can trust.
I do all my own work at my house, (it's not illegal) but I have a lifetime of experience working with electricity even though I have not pursued and obtained a license. I was an electrician in the US NAVY, and I have worked with electricity at my job for 25 years. I trust my own work, and a couple others who are also un-licensed, but other than that, I wouldn't let anyone else but a licensed electrician work on my house.

For one thing, it is not illegal. You, as a homeowner, have the right to do whatever you like to your home; however, depending on the state, if you remodel a certain % of the home you need to take out permit. City, county, and/or state inspector will then inspect your work.

Rewiring the electrical, all of it? I really can’t see the need to rewire the whole house; therefore, I thinking a circuit or two at the most.

If you’re a competent person who can fully understand basic wiring, then it is not that hard to do. I would suggest taking a electrical building trades course at a local junior college first, if possible. Or, buy a book that thoroughly explains basic wiring and a current electrical code book. You’ll need to read the section about single family dwellings. There are a lot of codes that you will need to know and I sure the inspector will point these out if you are in violation of them.

Hi Maine,

Sometimes when you don't have much experience with certain things, it is best to leave it to a professional.
Wiring is not that difficult, but it does depend on the type of project you are trying to tackle. I am the ultimate do it your selfer. I like doing those type of projects.

My Dad was an electrician, and contractor, and I worked with him when I was younger, and I am pretty sure I would not tackle this project alone.

This seems be be a tall order here.
You would also want to make sure that since you are spending the money to tackle this job it is done correctly, and ensure it is within code. I think you may want to bite the bullet here and let a licensed electrician do this for you. Make them guarantee it, and have an inspector verify the work.

Goodluck!

Difficult. And very complicated to do properly. Hire a real electrician. They are expensive but much cheaper than house fires. Why do you want to rewire the house?

You may get yourself in trouble legal wise for attempting this since electricians have to be licensed to do electrical work, they go to school to learn all the ins and outs of it.
They cannot legally even work in different counties from the one they are licensed in without a special permit.
Depending on where you live, I would check with the local city hall planning and zoning board to see what your options are.
BTW it is very complicated work so with no experience your biggest danger would be 1. Electrocution 2. A fire down the road from a short circuit in the walls.

With no experience, I'd say rewiring a house would be next to impossible and very dangerous.

you want to rewire the whole house? or just change out some plugs or something? i wouldn't recommend doing a whole house if you have never done it before. Its not just running wires. And why do you want to do this?

if you are talking about doing it yourself and you have no experience, DO NOT DO IT. Hire a licenced electrician, (ask to see his licence) Trying to save some money is not smart when it comes to electricity

I wouldn't suggest you do it alone. Do you know someone who works as a lineman at your local electric company? They should be cheaper than an electrican. My neighbor who is a lineman said he would do my one story house for $1000. That included rewiring all outlets and fixtures and installing a new breaker box. We're saving up money for him to do it.

Just hire someone and dont listen to snags it isn't always black to black ect there are many different ways things can be wired if you do it yourself half way through you will be mad that you tried and have to hire someone and then your bill will double because they will have to figure out what you tried doing So hire out trust me
