Yes, but you have to sacrifice a soft fluffy blanket and two cute pair (generally your favorite) of underwear!

Actually, the dryer acts as a conduit between the prime material plane and the elemental plane of air. That's how it dries things so well. However, since matter can not be created or destroyed on any given plane an exchange must occur. A sock here and there adds up to the same mass as the air used to dry the clothes. Do the math on it and you'll see that it adds up properly every time.
So, in summation, the socks don't come back. But it's a small price to pay for warm dry clothes.

Aha!!! that my dear, is an actual myth. The sock stealing monster ACTUALLY lives in the washing machine!!!!!
My hubby has worked as a plumber and it is a proven fact that socks get eaten by the washer, rather than the drier and I have seen the proof of this myself.
Our washer empties into a utility sink and one day it spit a sock out the hose and into the sink. (it must have been a nasty tasting sock, for sure.)
So the next time you try to argue with the dryer for being a thief, look to it's guilty partner instead.

You'll get it back eventually. Here's what happens. The sock monster takes the socks and eats them. He then poops them in someone else's washer. Just so they get clean. By the time this has happened, it's been about a month since socks digest slowly. He eats the socks from the dryer of the other person's house and your sock gets re-eaten. He comes back to your house and poops again in your washer. By now 2 months have gone by and you've already thrown away the mate of the missing sock. When you get your clothes out of the dryer you see the sock as well as a new one you've never seen before. Of course you threw away the mate and now have to throw away your returned sock. You have no clue what to do with the new sock that isn't yours. It's a vicious cycle.

Actually, the dryer (though washer more often) eats them so while they can come back, it is seldom in a usable state.
I'm serious, actually. Socks and other small articles of clothing can get lost between the inner compartment and the rest of the machine (this is more common in washers because the water causes them to float to the rim where, when wet, they can get caught and pulled out). If you disassembled your washer and dryer, there is a good chance you'd find quite a few socks stuck in the machinery (along with washer sheets you might use, etc).
You can reduce or eliminate the number of socks you loose by using upright washers and washing smaller loads at a time.

Greedy creature that he is, rarely ever. I do find, however, that sometimes he hides them in places such as the pockets of fitted sheets for me to find when putting fresh sheets on the bed. That leads me to believe that perhaps he has a sense of humor, although that theory is doubtful. However, I did have one experience which still makes me wonder. Several years ago I washed and dried my winter jacket, which had velcro closures on the pocket. After getting it out of the dryer, my husband and I went to our local mall. We'd been there quite awhile, when I felt something brushing against my hand. I looked down, and saw a sock attached to the velcro. It immediately went into my pocket, but I was really glad it was just a sock and not some underwear!

hahhaha, I have a theory the borrowers have a door in the back they steal the socks out of!
I am always losing socks though.
My fiance says he figures they get sucked in with the dryer lint.

I've made him several offerings of more appetizing items of clothing over the years, but he just wont budge. He is a greedy little sock monster.

Only once you give up and throw away the matching sock will the monster give back it's mate. He's mean like that.
