My neighbor across the street CONTINUALLY parks his 18 wheeler in front of our house. Its ALL we can see when we look out of our front windows. And sometimes he leaves it run for hours on end (I dont know why), and it is so loud it rattles the pictures on our walls so they hang crooked.

We live in a quiet little mid-income suburb neighborhood, and this guy is turning it into a trucking yard. I have made anonymouse phone calls to the police, and every time they make him move the truck. But he keeps on bringing it back.

Does anyone know what I should do? I dont want to confront him, because I dont want trouble (he's really an unfriendly guy). It is actually against the law to park an 18-wheeler in a residential street, right?

To answer some of your questions:
NO, I dont hate truckers. My family actually owns a moving company and I deal with dozens of truckers on a daily basis. Some of my family members are even truckers.

I realize that they are hard working folks who pay their dues. But so am I. And all I want is a little consideration.

And yes....the guy is home every day. I think he only drives localy. So the truck is parked outside between 8 - 10 hours a day.

I believe it depends on what classification your suburb is classed under local government. Some residential areas are still considered industrial even though there may be more residents than offices.
Your best bet is to call your local council/government (anonymously if you like) and make a complaint. I had the same problem with my neighbour and after making a complaint they issued him with fines for parking on the street, it actually came under that it was not allowed to be parked on the street at certain times of the days as he didn't run the trucking business from home and is not allowed to in the certain area. He now parks in his own backyard and he's none the wiser as to why he was given the infringements and my family has a much nicer view for it.

Unless the street has a weight restriction, or your community has a noise code or some kind of ordinance against it, He might legally be able to park there. As for the noise, you might have a legitimate complaint though. Just talk to him and explain the problem and he will more than likely understand. You say he's an unfriendly guy. He probably just looks that way because of being tired. Sleep deprivation is a big problem with truck drivers. I drove an 18 wheeler for over 8 years, and I can tell you first hand what a hassle it is finding a place to park these things. So many people have a dislike for trucks, but there is a lot they don't understand. Without trucks life as we know it would not exist. Everything we have was at one time on a truck - The clothes you wear, the food you eat, the gasoline in your car, all of your furniture and appliances, even the computer you are using. I guess people think when they go to the grocery store or Wal Mart or Target that this stuff just magically appears on the shelves. Without trucks our interstate highways would not exist. The average truck pays over $20,000 a year in road use taxes. That's where the money comes from to build new roads and repair old ones, not from passenger cars, they just get a free ride. Try giving the guy a break. He's just trying to make a living and in the process make your life a lot easier. If you see him outside strike up a conversation with him. Ask him about his truck and what he does. You'll probably find out he's a pretty decent guy.

Park My 18 Wheeler

I'm a trucker. It depends on the town. Some have ordinance's against it, some don't. I see your point, but generally i don't agree with these ordinances. I'm home a lousy 3 days a month, and I have to leave an $80,000 rig 40 miles away where it can be broken in to, hit by another truck, or stolen all together. My town is ridiculous about it too. I pulled up out front, no trailer once to pick up a few items, and two minutes later the cops were banging at my door. I would never leave it running, that's ridiculous, most of them have block heaters on them so you can plug it in with an extension cord and keep the engine warm. Why don't you just ask him to shut it off?
What's the deal anyway? is he home every day? most of us aren't. I'm gone for weeks at a time. Would you complain if it were an RV? Of course you wouldn't.
I work hard, pay my taxes. For the most part, people like you treat us like second class humans. We can't park at walmart and shop. no, you want to eat go to the truck stop where a bottle of soda costs $2.59 and a loaf of bread is $3.99. We deliver at customers and are told we aren't allowed to use the bathrooms. Go to the truckstop we are told. We are generally treated like dirt. Then I come home and have to put up with this. I paid my property taxes. it's my driveway, I paid for it. i pay my city income taxes. I can't park in my driveway because it's one of them "filthy" 18 wheelers, which by the way, minus the trailer it's a ten wheeler and I might also add is worth as much and in some cases more than most of the houses on my street.
Like I said the only thing I agree with you is him keeping it running. he should turn it off.

There is probably an ordinance against it. If the noise from the truck is bothering you then you can complain to the police about that too. Call your local police department and tell them about it next time it's parked out there. Tell the dispatcher you don't want to get involved and the officers won't tell the trucker who called.

Depending of the city, DONT DO IT. They are to big to be blocking a city street like that. Don't confront the person, call the cops and let them deal with it and keep calling until something is done about it. At least you will have the enjoyment of putting a crook in the driver's day.

Park your own car(s) in front of your house at every opportunity.

The legality of parking a semi in the street is undoubtedly a local issue.

Hi...my brother-in-law is a truck driver and he tried doing the same thing on their street. Like you, someone called the cops, and they made him move it. The reason he lets it run is because it is probably a "reefer unit" and he has to keep his
product cold. Even though he is my brother-in-law, I agree with you. They don't need to keep bringing these big trucks home!

I'm guessing that if the cops made him move it, than it's not legal.

Stop being anonymous and demand to the authorities that they put an end to it. (The squeaky wheel gets the grease and "anonymous" gets nothing)
