Having a family as you describe without marriage, is like building a wall of bricks with no mortar. Marriage is the cement that holds it all together when it is under stress. Marriage means more than living together or producing children.

Two people can have a commitment to each other. Married people have an additional dimension. They have a commitment to each other and a commitment to the marriage. This may not seem like much of a distinction but it is vastly different.

A commitment to each other is important but as I have found in my marriage people change. Without a commitment to the marriage it is far too easy to cut the cord and walk away. There may be times of extreme difficulty. One partner may become ill, disabled, suffer from emotional problems. or any of a long list of unexpected, unanticipated difficulty.

There are times when the two will not even like each other anymore or will have doubts that they even want to be near this person. But if the commitment to each other seems to be waining the commitment to the marriage can still hold them together. Often, as time passes and emotions cool, these married people discover each other again and realize how much they really mean to each other and to their offspring.

This is what I mean by the cement that holds them together. After the storm subsides what they have built is still standing or as I like to say, after I am done being a real jerk there is still somone there to apologize to.

I used to feel that marriage was just a piece of paper, but (without getting too personal). My first major relationship with a man (the father of my oldest child) failed and I think alot of it had to do with the fact that we were not married. Marriage makes you work harder at fixing problems and you know you can't just pick up and leave.

the idea is if your not married, technically its an open relationship, because anybody can just leave. and what if (god forbid) you two seperate? uh oh! no benefits and the other can leave scot free.
