There is a difference between the two. A memory stick is a brand of memory card. A thumb drive is a portable memory drive.

A thumb drive is a USB Flash Drive that acts like a hard drive when it is plugged into a USB port. A memory stick is not a USB device. It is a memory chip on a different medium that is often used in specific digital cameras. You can get an adapter that will plug into a USB port and then you can insert the memory stick in that. THen it acts like a Flash Drive. The only real difference is the connection and the intended use.

Moondog's right! They are called USB Flash-Drives or USB Drives! Memory Sticks(Sony TM) is a 'media' that is used in specific digital cameras and devices alike such as the PSP, and phones! They are not actually memory chips, but a 'media' that is used. Thumb drives is just a 'nickname' that Americans(or other Western nations) use for the so-called USB Flash-drives!

Both of the above are common... also USB sticks, USB memory sticks, USB stick drives, stick drives... plus I'm sure lots of other names. Oh, and Sony call them Micro Vaults.

Or they are even called MP3 players or digital cameras or phones...

I've heard them called thumb drives, jump drives, memory cards, memory sticks, etc. I think they are all acceptable.

They're called both. They're also called USB drives, and flash drives, and jump drives. You can also get custom ones - see the links below.
