It's certainly a gamble. I noted in the article that only a 'handful' showed up to get weapons and supplies. At that level, it does not create a grave risk (or would likely have much of an effect). But if the commanders on the ground think it is worth a try, let it play out a little.

But there may be something else going on here. It is clear that our days are numbered in Iraq (12 to 18 months is my guess). But the Iraqi government and troops will not have control of the country then, if ever. Putting weapons and supplies in the hands of local leaders may do what all of the politics of the fractured Iraqi state could not do - stabilize the country and allow people to live their lives.

It’s an act of desperation. Nothing else is working so why not arm the insurgents.

Even if the Sunni insurgents are successful against Al Qaeda they will turn their attention, and weapons, on the American occupiers.
