Progress is made only when whole populace push the cart in one direction. With one big segment of the society(Muslims), always at the logger head with majority community, there was no chance of progress. Even after partition, the main minority (Muslims) are the biggest impediment to progress of India. Clubbed with partitioned populace they would have ruined India. Good question.

India has been the home of many races, religions, languages and cultures for a long time. Only under the Britisher's flag it came under one central rule. During the British Raj, there were many princely states dotting the Indian map, ruled by small and big Rajahs and Nawabs. The other part called British India had 3 Presidencies and 7 Provinces under British Governors. The basis of a state was the administrative convenience only.
The prtition saw that 2 provinces in the Northwest fully and Punjab ,in part, went to Pakistan .In the East sizeable part of Bengal and Sylhet district of Assam went to
East Pakistan!
Immediately after partition , attempts were made to
annexe all princely states. And subsequently map was redrawn on the basis of liguistic states.
Thanks to our commitment to democracy and planned development , we launched Five Year Plans to bring about socio-economic transformation.
Now after 60 years we feel proud that we have a sustained annual growth rate of 8% And by 2025 we are sure to be the world's Third Super Power!

NO. In no way partition has helped India. I agree that India has made many significant developments compared to bangladesh and pakistan but think in the aspect of military. If India and pakistan were under one rule we would have been world's no.1 superpower. It is assumed that by 2025 India would be world's no.3 superpower. Still quite alot time and not the first rank.
Also think about the military budget we have to spend in kashmir and how many of our soldiers are losing live everyday in kashmir and north-east. Creating borders was not useful in anyway.

I don't think the partition of India had any bearing on its development. Having said that I think India has developed a great deal more than Pakistan or Bangladesh. Reason is attributed to the solid democracy of the country, the very cornerstone of the country's success. Pakistan and Bangladesh have no idea of democracy and sadly never will.
