There are three ways to interpret that question, so I will give you three answers.
1.) In order to recuperate our bodily functions, and refresh our sanity.
2.) If we did not, the Humanity would fail to populate itself and would die off over the course of 80 - 100 years.
3.) Why not?

To sleep. To screw. Perhaps it is a representative return to the safety and security of the womb, people curled up in fetal position, warm, supported, oblivious to the outside world. Maybe because somebody else already has the couch.
