It had something to do with this guy, beng in jail towards the end and going after some folks by way of sending his spirit while his body was in the cell all yoga like. I think maybe the cop's family was in some gorgeous secluded house someplace in the desert and the evil guy's spirit either took their bodies over to make them hurt each other or he just did it I can't remember. It has been driving me crazy not being able to remember that dang movie. Thanks!

...I've got two, count 'em, two titles off the top of my head, which involved a killer that uses astral projection as his modis operendi; they are:
"Invisible Strangler", from 1976, also called "The Astral Factor"...
"Psychic Killer", from 1975, and starring Jim Hutton
...but these are both from the '70's, and I guess you are looking for something from the '80's; unfortunately I don't recall anything that even comes close to resembling what you describe, with the exception of the above titles...

I can recall a movie with some astral projection-like theme. It's title is "Dreamscape" starring Dennis Quaid..... though am not sure if this is the movie you're looking for. Just trying to help here
