Well, knowing that there is no such thing as ferry 'driver' would be a good start. You captain a ferry, you don't 'drive' it.

Many years seagoing experience, plus a whole stack of relevant qualifications, is what you need to become a ferry captain...

As you are talking about a "Driver" I assume you mean someone who DRIVES LORRIES on and off the ferry rather than a seaman. For that you will need an HGV licence to drive the lorries!!

Have a look on the MCA website this lays out all the standards. Basically you 'Navigate' a ship and not drive or captain it as ace says!
You need to be qualified as a merchant navy deck officer, and have a watchkeeping certificate of competence.

A 100 ton captain's license, and off shore qualification, possibly requiring a pilots license for the area.
