Both, in theory. The stopcock stops the cold water which means that the hot water tank can't refill till it's supply is reintroduced.

If you turn the main stop **** off which is normally found in the kitchen area it will only turn of the cold water, unless your heating system is powered by a combi boiler then it will also turn off the hot water.

To turn off the hot water with a conventional heating system you should be able to close a gate valve which is fitted to a 22mm pipe which runs from the cold water tank in the roof to the bottom of the hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard. After closing this valve open the hot water taps to drain the residue in the pipework.

The main stop **** turns off the cold water supply. This water supply feeds all the other areas of the house ie. hot water tank if fitted and cold water tank if fitted.. these tend to be used with older systems the modern combi boilers don't use them. So having turned it off open the taps and drain the system so that all the water in pipes and tanks can be emptied - turn on all your taps 'cos I've lived in old converted buildings that have had more than one supply!

It will turn off your mains supply, however your hot and cold water systems will still be full of water. Depending on what you want to do/repair, you will have to drain either the cold or hot water system, or both. If it is a modern house you may well find each tap has a shut off valve on the pipe below it, which makes life a lot simpler, as all you need to do is shut off the valve on the tap you want to repair/replace, without having to drain everything else down, or indeed turn off the stop ****. I just love the Yahoo facist police!

The main cold water supply and, if your water is heated by a combination boiler, a multipoint water heater or any other mains-fed instantaneous water heater, it will also turn off the hot water supply.

If your hot water is heated by any other method then the hot water will still be available until you have drained down the storage tanks.

It will turn off your cold water straight away and your hot water depends how it is heated. If it is a Combi boiler that too will stop right away. If you have a copper tank that stores hot water.it will stop running when the water storage tank that fills your copper tank runs out.

Your cold water supply will stop.Leave all your taps running to empty the system as you will still have water in the tanks in the house.

Depends which stopc0ck. You may still have a tank of cold water in the loft and a tank of hot water in your immersion tank.

Just the cold feed - and you will need to run the taps to empty the tanks first as well - and flush the loos.
